In a society where we are never offline, where we are constantly on the go, it is time to pause.
It is time to take time for ourselves, full stop. Every day the expectations from both our professional and personal life become more and more demanding. We live with our smart phones turned on 24/7. Immediate response is expected with email, text and social media. Mental health issues are at an all time high. In order to take care of everything around us, first we must take care of ourselves.
We always hear the airplane analogy. You know the one… First use the oxygen mask on yourself before you can help anyone else. It is the same for the rest of our lives. It doesn’t make us selfish. We are often raised to feel bad about taking care of ourselves first. Think back to when you were a small child. You didn’t think of anyone else. That was normal behaviour. There was nothing wrong with that. Yet, as we grow, we are made to feel guilty for taking care of ourselves.
I am not saying you should only think of yourself at all times. What I am saying is you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else. Use the oxygen mask. Breathe it in! Then, and only then are you equipped to take care of others. If you can’t breathe, how can you help someone else?
So let’s do that. It is time to really breathe. It is time to really stop and work on what needs to be done.
Start with something small. Go for a walk around the block without your phone. Baby steps…
Are you ready? You got this!
